After more than five decades with Brisbane City Council and as a valued member of Brighter Super, Charlie Ladd has retired with clarity, purpose and a strong sense of confidence in his future.
Charlie joined council as an apprentice carpenter and joiner in the 1970s, when being enrolled in a default superannuation fund was simply part of starting work, becoming a member of what is now Brighter Super.
Now retired, his days are anything but quiet. He spends time with his daughter, helps care for his grandchildren, and dedicates several hours each day to the Freshwater Fishing and Stocking Association of Queensland, where he serves as President. His calendar may be full, but it’s on his own terms.
As he puts it: “I’m living the dream.” Charlie credits this confidence to early planning, the right guidance, and getting advice from a steady, trusted superannuation fund like Brighter Super.
Planning for uncertainty
Like many Australians, Charlie knew retirement was approaching, but it was not until his early sixties that he started to seriously think about what it would look like. Although he had consistently contributed to his super, Charlie knew the move from full-time work into retirement was not straightforward.
Having watched friends retire without a plan and struggle financially, he was determined to avoid that uncertainty.
“I've seen the other side where people do retire but they've got part-time jobs because they can’t afford the lifestyle they want. It’s often because they started planning for retirement too late,” Charlie said.
At age sixty-two, Charlie reached out to Brighter Super for guidance on what retirement might look like for him. Working alongside his account manager, Peter Hoban, he explored his goals and built a retirement strategy grounded in two priorities: ensuring he had enough reliable income to support his lifestyle, and making sure his super was set up to support his retirement ambitions over the long term.
They mapped out his finances, tested different scenarios and, within a short period, gained a clear understanding of what lay ahead. “That gave me confidence,” Charlie said. “I knew where I stood and what I could do.”
A seamless transition
With a plan in place, Charlie took a measured approach to finishing work. He provided his team advanced notice, and helped train his replacement, ensuring a smooth handover. By the time he stepped away, there were no surprises.
Charlie also made the deliberate choice to ease into the financial realities of retirement, taking two-and-a-half years of leave at half-pay, helping him adjust to a reduced income. By the time he retired, his financial security was no longer a question mark.
“Planning for retirement doesn’t happen overnight,” he said. “You’ve got to give yourself time to get used to it.”
A retirement built around what matters
Although Charlie has stepped back from full-time work, he hasn’t slowed down. Alongside the hours he dedicates each day volunteering for Freshwater Fishing, the most meaningful part of his retirement is the time he spends with his daughter and grandchildren.
“I wanted to make sure I was financially secure and available for my daughter and grandkids. Whenever she needs a babysitter, or childminder, I wanted to be available to do that.”
Family has been central to many of Charlie’s retirement decisions, as it is for many Australians. His retirement plan gave him the flexibility to support his family when it mattered most.
For Charlie, super has never been just about his own retirement. It has been about securing his family’s legacy, and giving them stability, opportunity, and a strong foundation for the future.
Expert, tailored advice makes all the difference
When asked what his life would look like without Peter and Brighter Super, Charlie doesn’t hesitate: “I dread to think.” He has seen what happens when people move into retirement without a plan, and he is grateful to have avoided that experience.
The relationship he built with Peter was central to his confidence. What began as a discussion about retirement planning soon developed into a trusted partnership grounded in clear communication, genuine care, and reliable planning.
“With Peter's help, I've achieved what I want to achieve. I have a comfortable lifestyle. I don't have to go and find work anywhere. And my job is really just taking a display trailer around the state, educating people about freshwater fishing, which I love.”
To those considering or preparing for retirement, Charlie’s message is straightforward: “Start early. Get advice. And don’t wait until the last minute.”
With Brighter Super right by his side, Charlie has turned what could have been a daunting transition into a retirement defined by confidence, purpose, and family.
Today, in every sense of the phrase, Charlie is living his brighter retirement.
