How we invest

Brighter Super’s aim is to grow our members’ super balances, while providing consistent returns.

That means we want your investment to grow when markets are performing strongly, and reduce the impact when markets start to fall.

We place great value on diversification, which means not having all your eggs in the one basket. To achieve this, we spread your money across a number of different asset classes to reduce the level of risk.

Assest classes

Asset classes form the building blocks of our investment options. Traditionally, investments have been classed as either growth assets or defensive assets.

Growth assets like shares tend to rise in value over time. Defensive assets like cash and fixed interest pay regular income.

At Brighter Super, we believe many of the assets in our fund can have both characteristics. For example, we see property, diversifying strategies and infrastructure as having features of both growth and defensive assets.

The combination of these growth and defensive features gives members the opportunity to grow their super in a rising market, while providing a degree of protection in poorly performing markets.

Depending on the investment option you choose, your super will be invested across a range of asset classes, including cash, fixed interest, shares, property, infrastructure, private equity and diversifying strategies.

Brighter Super strategically incorporates unlisted assets, which are assets not listed on an exchange, into its portfolio. Unlisted assets are a key part of Brighter Super’s strategy and portfolio as they provide both income and capital appreciation, while also offering defensive characteristics that contribute to a more resilient investment strategy.

We identify investment opportunities that possess the following characteristics:

Insulation from volatility – while no investment is risk free, our diversified approach seeks to minimise the impact of market instability.
Innovative direct investments – these include unique projects and infrastructure assets with strong market share (or with a monopoly).
Tangible assets that benefit the entire community.

North Queensland Gas Pipeline

19% ownership

Location: Queensland

North Queensland Gas Pipeline (NQGP) is a 391km onshore natural gas pipeline system, transporting gas from the Moranbah Gas Project in the Bowen Basin to Townsville, Queensland. The pipeline is a strategic piece of energy infrastructure that transports gas from the reserves of the Bowen Basin to the rapidly growing economy of North Queensland.

What makes it unique?

The pipeline is North Queensland's only source of natural gas, supplying an essential service to a critical power station.
Sunshine Coast Airport

50% ownership

Location: Queensland

Sunshine Coast Airport is one of Australia’s fastest growing airport, recording the highest year‑on‑year passenger growth nationally and handling close to 1.9 million passengers annually, according to the latest federal aviation statistics. Operating as an international airport since 2016, it now leverages major infrastructure upgrades including the construction of a new runway in 2020 to attract larger aircraft and new routes, as well as the first Australian airport to be accredited for carbon neutral operations.

What makes it unique?

This is the only large commercial airport on the Sunshine Coast. Its close proximity to local industry and popular holiday locations make it a valuable asset which we anticipate will deliver capital growth long into the future.
Port of Portland

31% ownership

Location: Victoria

Port of Portland is a deep-water bulk port strategically located between the ports of Melbourne and Adelaide. It handles a diverse range of bulk commodities and acts as the international gateway for Australia’s ‘Green Triangle Region’ - an area encompassing significant natural resources and production industries.

What makes it unique?

As the only naturally deep‑water port servicing the Green Triangle the Port of Portland has exclusive access to major primary production, which provide a number of strategic advantages that will underpin future demand.
Gold Coast Rapid Rail Transit

5.1% ownership

Location: Queensland

The Gold Coast Rapid Rail project is one of the biggest public transport projects in the country, and the biggest transport infrastructure project ever undertaken on the Gold Coast.

What makes it unique?

This project is a concession with State Government to design, construct and operate a Gold Coast light rail system. As Queensland’s first ever light rail system, it is popular with locals and tourists alike.
Tasmanian Gas Pipeline

Ownership 28.6%

Location: Australia

The Tasmanian Gas Pipeline (TGP) is the only, pipeline that transports natural gas from, Victoria to Tasmania. The 740km gas pipeline, supplies gas to the residential Tas Gas network, as well as smelters, hospitals, factories, breweries and power stations.

What makes it unique?

This is the only gas pipeline into Tasmania, supplying an essential service to many homes and industries.
Tilt Renewables

Ownership 1.29%

Location: Australia

Tilt Renewables is an Australian renewable energy platform with over 1.9GW of developed, owned, and operated renewable generation. Power generation and transmission company with significant market share in Latin America thanks to its presence in Peru, Chile, Argentina, Guatemala, El Salvador and Ecuador. The company produces more than 2,300 megawatts of thermal and hydroelectric power.

What makes it unique?

Tilt Renewables is a leading renewable generation platform that owns the largest portfolio of operational wind assets in Australia. Benefits from long-term power purchase agreements such as this, with high-grade companies and fixed-price capacity payments for its generation assets, and regulated transmission revenues.
