Making it easier to adjust your Brighter Super Income Protection cover
We understand that the recent Energy Queensland Union Collective Agreement changes have brought about new options regarding your superannuation and Income Protection cover. With the new Energy Queensland Union Collective Agreement, we want to make it easier for you to review, make changes to and cancel your Brighter Super Income Protection cover.
Currently, Energy Queensland pays the premium for your default Death, Total and Permanent Disablement (TPD) and Income Protection insurance cover within your Brighter Super account. As directed by the new Energy Queensland Union Collective Agreement, Income Protection cover will be provided by Windsor Income Protection and your default Income Protection cover with Brighter Super will soon no longer be paid by Energy Queensland.
With your best interests in mind, to ensure you do not have duplicate Income Protection cover and unnecessary insurance premiums deducted from your account, we are working with Energy Queensland and will cease offering Income Protection cover on 31 August 2024. In the meantime you may choose to cancel your Brighter Super Income Protection cover early and we outline how to do this below.
Your default Death and TPD premiums within your Brighter Super account will continue to be paid for by Energy Queensland.
Defined benefit members have different arrangements and this information does not apply to them.
How to retain your Brighter Super Income Protection cover
You can keep your Brighter Super Income Protection cover subject to acceptance by our insurer Zurich.
It is important to note that if you elect to keep your existing Brighter Super Income Protection cover or Additional Cover, then in the event you make a claim, any payments you receive from Windsor Income Protection Cover will reduce any payment from your Brighter Super Income Protection cover or Additional Cover. You can find out more about your insurance cover with Brighter Super by logging into your account online at brightersuper.com.au.
Please note that Energy Queensland will cease paying additional contributions for your Brighter Super Income Protection cover from 31 August 2024. If you elect to retain your cover, premiums will continue to be deducted from your account, including any premiums for Additional Cover, if you have elected this cover. The premium for default Income Protection cover is currently $524.68 per year. If you have Additional Cover above the default cover level, or have elected a shorter waiting period, the amount of the premium deducted will be higher.
If you would like to retain your Income Protection cover, please complete the Insurance Cover Election form – Energy Queensland available below and send it back to us by 30 August 2024.

How to cancel your Brighter Super Income Protection cover
If you would like to cancel your Brighter Super Income Protection cover, you can complete the Insurance Cancellation form, IC – Energy Industry, scan or photograph the completed form and email it to insurance@brightersuper.com.au
If you cancel your Income Protection cover with Brighter Super and choose to reapply for cover in the future, you may be subject to underwriting or special conditions or exclusions.
Important considerations
During this time you will have two Income Protection policies. If you have two Income Protection policies at the time of a claim, you may not be able to claim the full benefit stated under each policy. It may be possible to claim against both policies. However, each policy has its own terms and conditions which will impact the benefit amount you are entitled to receive during a claim. There will be a limit to the amount that you can claim.
We recommend that you seek financial advice before making a decision about your insurance cover. Please note Brighter Super is unable to provide advice relating to the cover in place with Windsor Income Protection or whether you should retain or cancel your Brighter Super Income Protection cover.
