Nominate a beneficiary

If you were to write a list of all the assets you own would you remember to include super on that list? After all, it’s often our biggest asset along with our home. So it’s important to consider who you want to receive your super when you die.

To ensure your Death benefit is paid the way you want, it's important to nominate your beneficiaries and, whenever life changes, to make sure your nomination is up to date.

You can nominate as many eligible beneficiaries as you like. Who superannuation benefits can be paid to is strictly defined by legislation, as outlined below.

David ‘Kochie’ Koch explains what happens to your super after you die on an episode of Your Money Your Life

Non-lapsing binding death benefit nomination

If we have accepted the nomination and it remains valid at the time of your death, we must pay your Death benefit to your nominated dependants or legal personal representative in accordance with your instructions and the terms of our Trust Deed. A non-lapsing binding death benefit nomination does not expire and can be completed online or via a paper form.

While your nomination will not expire, your nomination will become invalid if you have either permanently separated from your nominated spouse, or if you commence a relationship with a new spouse. You should review your nomination regularly to ensure it remains valid and still aligns with your wishes.

To update your non-lapsing binding death benefit nomination, simply log on to Member Online or download and complete a Binding Death Benefit Nomination form.

Further information on non-lapsing binding death benefit nominations can be found in the relevant Member guide.

Lapsing binding death benefit nomination

If your nomination is valid at the time of your death, we must pay your Death benefit to your nominated dependants or legal personal representative in accordance with your instructions and the law. A lapsing binding death benefit nomination lapses after three years and can only be completed via a paper form.

Who can I nominate as my beneficiary?

We can pay your death benefit to:

  • your dependants
  • your legal personal representative (like the executor of your will or administrator of your estate)

For more details regarding death benefits please refer to the Death Benefit page on our website.

Preferred beneficiary nomination

A preferred beneficiary nomination helps guide us when deciding who to pay your benefit to. Unlike a binding death benefit nomination, Brighter Super is not legally required to follow your instructions. This is because we are obliged to identify all dependents and pay your benefit according to the rules in our Trust Deed and superannuation legislation.

Reversionary beneficiary

With a reversionary beneficiary nomination your pension can continue to be paid as a pension to your beneficiary (generally your spouse). Before nominating a reversionary beneficiary please refer to the Pension PDS for further information.

It’s important to consider whether your pension payment may affect the reversionary beneficiary’s overall financial position, including their tax situation and/or Centrelink benefits, before making a reversionary nomination.
