Are you in the right investment option?

If you were previously with Suncorp Super and are currently invested in the Asteron Traditional Capital Guaranteed Fund option, it’s important that you understand how your money is invested.

What is the Asteron Traditional Capital Guaranteed Fund option?

The Asteron Traditional Capital Guaranteed Fund option is a closed investment option available only to existing members who are already invested in it. This option commenced several years ago through Suncorp Super and was the default investment option for some of their employer plans.

The option is a very low-risk approach with a capital guarantee, meaning investment returns will never fall below zero. The Asteron Traditional Capital Guaranteed Fund option is designed to protect your super balance from market downturns, making it suitable for members who prioritise stability and capital protection over higher returns.

  • Risk Level: Very Low
  • Return Target: Provide a capital guarantee and maximise returns from a mix of shares, property, alternative growth assets, fixed interest and cash. The Asteron Traditional Capital Guaranteed Fund aims to earn a rate of return that exceeds Consumer Price Index (CPI) increases by at least 0.50% over a rolling 10-year period.
  • Asset allocation: The Asteron Traditional Capital Guaranteed Fund option invests approximately:
    • 70% in defensive assets – such as cash and fixed interest
    • 30% in growth assets – including Australian and international shares

Why should I review my investment option?

While the Asteron Traditional Capital Guaranteed Fund option can protect your super balance, it also limits potential growth. Over time, this may mean your super isn’t growing as much as it could be.

Since the investment option was introduced, the allocation to growth assets has decreased from 50% to the current level of 30%. This shift reflects the option’s conservative approach but may not align with the long-term growth needs of members with Accumulation accounts.

If your circumstances or risk appetite have changed over the years and you haven’t considered your investments for some time, it may be worth reviewing your current arrangement to ensure it still suits your needs.

What can I do?

  • Make a change if needed: You can select one or more investment options. If you want to make an investment switch but leave some money in the Asteron Traditional Capital Guaranteed Fund option, you will need to complete a Change your investment options form, or to switch your whole balance you can make the change in Member Online. Important things to consider

As the Asteron Traditional Capital Guaranteed Fund option is a closed product, if you fully withdraw your investment from this option, then you won’t be able to reinvest in this option in the future. To keep this option open to you, you must maintain at least $1 in the option. However, to maintain the investment option you should consider leaving a sufficient amount to cover any fees and insurance premiums.

Example: John has 100% of his $25,000 balance invested in the Asteron Traditional Capital Guaranteed Fund option. If John wishes to switch a portion of his investment to another option but maintain his investment, he can switch 90% ($22,500) into another option and retain 10% ($2,500) in the Asteron Traditional Capital Guaranteed Fund option.

*This example is for illustrative purposes only, and not a recommendation about what you should do. You should consider what is right for you based on your own circumstances before making any decisions.
